Importance of Safety Eyewear

Eye being the most sensitive part is prone to damage from hazards such as splinters, chips, dust, protruding objects, pressurized fluids, chemical splashes, vapours, gases and UV light.
Injuries to eyes in a workplace setup is very common.

In 2015, There were about 12,000 New Zealanders who filed a claim with ACC for eye injury.



Most common types of eye injury in a workplace:

1.Flying particles gets struck in the eye and objects such as nuts, bolts, ball bearings, springs, and fragments from abrasive blasting and grinding.

2.Striking the eye against an object, for instance by blundering into a protruding piece of equipment.

3.Eye is in contact with: 
o molten metals, hot liquids, corrosive chemicals, irritant liquids, infectious agents.
o Fumes—corrosive, irritant.
o Dusts particals—organic, chemical, abrasive, corrosive.

4.Exposure to radiation from welding flash, ultraviolet or infrared radiation, very hot substances, laser beams, laser reflection or fibre optics.

WHEN SHOULD I WEAR SAFETY EYEWEAR?

The best way to understand whether you need eye protection is to analysis the hazards in your workplace. The types of hazards and the PPE required to carry out your job will define whether you need a Safety Eyewear. This assessment should be carried out in a educated and well informed manner. 

Eye hazards are in every workplace and some jobs are more at risk than others. 
People working as builders, construction site workers, plumbers, electricians, tool or equipment operators or in manufacturing industries does require there eyes to be protected.
